Manik Strike Sends Bangladesh Through

Bangladesh Under-20s secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Nepal to book their place in the final of the SAFF Under-20 Championship, demonstrating composure, tactical discipline and attacking intent throughout a tightly contested semi-final. Despite Nepal’s success in containing key forward Ronan Sullivan, they were unable to prevent Mark Cox’s side from progressing.

This triumph marks Bangladesh’s third appearance in a SAFF Under-20 final, underlining the steady growth of the nation’s youth football programme. Having finished runners-up in 2022 after losing to India, Bangladesh rebounded impressively in 2024 by defeating Nepal on their home soil to claim the title. Now, they stand on the brink of another potential triumph, with the final scheduled for 3 April against the winner of the second semi-final between India and Bhutan.

From the opening whistle at the National Stadium in Malé, Bangladesh asserted control with an aggressive, wing-oriented attacking approach. Their use of width caused persistent problems for Nepal’s defence, which struggled to cope with a series of dangerous crosses delivered from both flanks.

The decisive moment arrived in the 11th minute. A precise delivery from the right by Morshed Ali found Mohammad Manik inside the penalty area. Manik rose superbly to meet the cross, directing a powerful header beyond the goalkeeper to give Bangladesh an early lead.

Just a minute later, Sullivan appeared to double the advantage with a skilful solo effort, evading two defenders before finishing clinically. However, the goal was ruled out for offside, denying Bangladesh a second. Nepal, having conceded early, attempted to regroup and find a way back into the contest, but Bangladesh’s compact defensive structure proved difficult to break down.

The South Asian side in red and green maintained their attacking momentum, seeking a second goal to secure the match. In the 36th minute, Nazmul Huda threaded a defence-splitting pass to Sullivan, but Nepal’s goalkeeper Pemba reacted swiftly to smother the danger before a shot could be taken.

After the interval, Bangladesh adopted a more measured approach, retaining possession and launching calculated attacks. Their rhythm, however, was briefly disrupted in the 52nd minute when goalscorer Manik was forced off the field on a stretcher due to injury, with Joy Ahmed introduced as his replacement.

Bangladesh continued to create opportunities, with Nazmul missing a promising chance in the 56th minute. A notable moment followed in the 87th minute, when Declan Sullivan—a United States-based player of Bangladeshi origin and brother of Ronan—made his debut, signalling the team’s expanding talent pool.

Nepal mounted sustained pressure during the final 15 minutes, pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Nevertheless, Bangladesh’s defenders held firm, displaying resilience and organisation under pressure. Deep into stoppage time, Bangladesh had a chance to seal the win, but Suman Soren failed to convert after being set up by Declan.
