Dominic Frimpong, a winger for Ghana Premier League side Berekum Chelsea, has been killed after armed robbers opened fire on the team’s bus while it was returning from an away fixture. The incident occurred on Sunday and was later confirmed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
According to the GFA, Berekum Chelsea had travelled to the southern town of Samreboi to play a match against Samartex. Following the conclusion of the fixture, the team began its return journey to Berekum. While travelling along the Goaso–Bibiani road, the bus carrying the players and staff was intercepted by a group of armed robbers.
In a statement released on Monday, Berekum Chelsea detailed the sequence of events. The club reported that the attackers blocked the road, preventing the vehicle from proceeding. As the driver attempted to reverse the bus in order to escape, masked individuals armed with guns and assault rifles began firing directly at the vehicle. During the attack, players and staff abandoned the bus and sought cover in nearby bushes in an effort to protect themselves.
Frimpong, aged 20, was fatally shot during the incident. The GFA subsequently confirmed his death in an official statement.
The association expressed its reaction in a formal message, stating: “We are deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic news of the death of Dominic Frimpong of Berekum Chelsea Football Club. This unfortunate is not only a significant loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to the entire Ghanaian football community. Dominic was a bright young talent, and his dedication and passion for the game had become an important part of our league.”
Following the incident, the GFA indicated that it would take steps to strengthen security arrangements for clubs travelling to and from domestic league matches. The focus will be on improving safety measures during road journeys undertaken by teams participating in national competitions.
A similar had previously been recorded in 2023. On that occasion, a bus carrying Legon Cities players was attacked by assailants while returning from a match against Samartex. Although no casualties were reported in that incident, it raised concerns regarding the safety of teams travelling for league fixtures.
A summary of the reported incidents is provided below:
| Year | Club | Opponent | Location | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Berekum Chelsea | Samartex | Goaso–Bibiani Road | Dominic Frimpong killed |
| 2023 | Legon Cities | Samartex | Return journey route | No casualties reported |
The recurrence of such incidents has highlighted ongoing risks associated with team travel during domestic competitions in Ghana.
