Kylian Mbappé has found himself at the centre of renewed controversy at Real Madrid following a dispute with head coach Álvaro Arbeloa and a hostile reaction from sections of supporters at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The French forward, already enduring a difficult season without silverware at Real Madrid, returned to action after recovering from a thigh injury. However, during the La Liga fixture against Real Oviedo on Thursday, he was not included in the starting eleven and instead came on as a substitute in the 69th minute. Upon his introduction, he was met with whistles and jeers from parts of the home crowd.
Real Madrid secured a 2–0 victory in the match, but attention shifted to Mbappé’s post-match remarks. Speaking to journalists, he claimed that coach Álvaro Arbeloa had described him as the “fourth-choice forward” in the squad, behind Franco Mastantuono, Vinícius Júnior and Gonzalo García.
Mbappé stated that he accepted the situation, adding that he had attempted to contribute to the team during the minutes he was given. He also reiterated that he had been ready to start the match from the beginning, but respected the coach’s decision and intended to work hard to regain his place in the starting line-up.
Shortly after these comments, Arbeloa addressed the matter in his own press conference and directly rejected Mbappé’s interpretation. The coach said he had never referred to the player in such terms and suggested that there had been a misunderstanding. He also added that it would not be possible for him to label Mbappé as a “fourth-choice” forward.
Arbeloa further explained his selection decision, noting that it was not normal to immediately restore a player to the starting eleven after he had only recently returned from injury and had not featured in the squad just days earlier. He emphasised that, as head coach, selection decisions remain under his control.
The match marked Real Madrid’s first home fixture following their loss of the league title race to Barcelona. Mbappé had previously missed El Clásico due to injury and also faced criticism from sections of supporters and Spanish media after taking a brief authorised break during his rehabilitation period.
Addressing that period, Mbappé stated that his leave had been approved by the club and acknowledged the fans’ reaction, saying their dissatisfaction was to be expected.
He also commented on the team’s wider struggles this season, noting that Real Madrid had started the campaign strongly but had lost consistency in the second half, along with their playing identity.
