After four consecutive defeats in the English Premier League, Liverpool finally returned to winning ways, defeating Aston Villa 2-0 on Saturday night.
The goals for Liverpool came from Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch. Salah’s strike marked his 250th goal for the club. The victory also propelled the Reds to third place in the league table.
From the outset at Anfield, Liverpool dominated the game, creating several opportunities in the first half but failing to find the net.
Just before half-time, during added time, Salah capitalised on a mistake by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and slotted the ball into the net, making full use of the chance.
This goal was Salah’s 250th for Liverpool. He became the third player in the club’s history to reach the milestone, following Ian Rush (346) and Roger Hunt (285).
Liverpool added a second goal in the second half. In the 58th minute, Ryan Gravenberch scored with a brilliant strike, extending the lead to 2-0. Although no further goals were scored, Jurgen Klopp’s side walked off the pitch with a comfortable victory.
After the match, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp praised Salah, saying, “Scoring 250 goals for a single club is incredible. Today he was outstanding not just in attack, but in defence as well.”
Salah, himself jubilant after ending the four-match losing streak, said, “This win was much needed. We had lost a few matches, but now we are back on the winning track. Reaching 250 goals for a club like Liverpool is truly a proud moment.”
With this win, Liverpool now have 18 points from 10 matches, sitting third in the table, seven points behind league leaders Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa have slipped to 11th place with 15 points. Liverpool will next host Real Madrid at Anfield in the Champions League on Tuesday.
