Goals from Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago, and Fabio Carvalho propelled an impressive, undefeated Brentford side past Chelsea and up into third place in the league table. Under Alonso’s tutelage, Chelsea had initially captured imaginations by storming through the opening four matches of the campaign, netting an astonishing nineteen goals to earn a reputation as the league’s most exciting attacking unit.
However, the momentum stalled drastically after forward João Pedro was sidelined with a knee injury, robbing the side of its cutting edge. In pursuit of that elusive control, the Spanish tactician made four changes to his starting lineup. Notably, he handed Jordan Henderson his full debut for the club against his former employers, Brentford. The first half largely went according to Alonso’s script, with both goalkeepers untroubled as a cagey tactical battle unfolded.
The complexion of the match shifted dramatically after the restart, with Brentford raising the intensity and aggressively targeting Chelsea’s long-standing frailties from set-pieces. The misery was compounded deep into stoppage time when Schade drilled a low cross across the box, which took a wicked deflection before falling kindly to Carvalho. The midfielder lofted a fierce shot over Martínez’s head to seal the rout.
