Neymar Sees Red After Controversial VAR Decision Against Santos

Neymar’s return to the spotlight has taken another controversial turn after the Brazilian forward was sent off during Santos’ 1-1 draw against Bahia in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. The dismissal followed an exchange with Bahia midfielder Rodrigo Nestor, during which Neymar covered his mouth with his hand while speaking to his opponent. The incident prompted a VAR review and resulted in a straight red card.

The decision overshadowed a dramatic finish at Santos’ home ground, Vila Belmiro, where the hosts salvaged a point with a last-gasp equaliser. It also left Neymar facing suspension for upcoming fixtures, adding to the frustration of a match that had already seen him booked for an earlier incident.

Bahia took the lead in the 39th minute through defender Luciano Juba, putting the visitors in a strong position to claim all three points. Santos struggled to find an equaliser during normal time, but Luan Peres Petroni struck in the dying moments of stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw and prevent a home defeat.

Despite the late goal, the main talking point was Neymar’s dismissal. The incident occurred shortly before the second half began, when the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward exchanged words with Nestor. Neymar covered his mouth as he spoke, while Nestor raised a complaint that ultimately led to the incident being reviewed by the video assistant referee.

Referee Sávio Pereira Sampaio had been facing away from the exchange when it took place. Following the complaint and a VAR review, however, he decided to show Neymar a straight red card.

The precise words exchanged between the two players were not established in the account of the incident. Nevertheless, the decision sparked an angry reaction from Neymar, who strongly disputed the circumstances surrounding his dismissal.

Speaking as he left the field, the Brazilian insisted that the exchange had begun as harmless banter between the players. He suggested that Nestor had exaggerated the situation and accused his opponent of using an underhand tactic to influence the referee.

“We were having fun on the pitch, laughing at each other. At that moment, I went over to speak to Nestor. I accidentally put my hand over my mouth, and I hadn’t even opened my mouth to say anything when he raised his hand and started making a scene,” Neymar said.

He continued: “This is one of the dirtiest tricks in football! And I’ll deal with Nestor.”

The remarks reflected Neymar’s anger at a decision he clearly felt was unjust. However, his explanation did not alter the referee’s decision, leaving Santos to deal with the consequences of losing one of their most influential attacking players.

Neymar’s dismissal is particularly significant given Santos’ demanding schedule. According to the match report, he will miss Wednesday’s fixture against Palmeiras as a result of the red card. He is also set to miss the following Monday’s match against Red Bull Bragantino after accumulating three yellow cards during the current campaign.

Missing two consecutive fixtures would be a setback for Santos, especially as the club seeks consistency in Brazil’s top-flight competition. Neymar’s attacking quality and experience make him an important figure in the side, although disciplinary incidents can leave the team without his services at crucial moments.

The draw against Bahia offered Santos some relief, with the late equaliser preventing defeat in front of their home supporters. Yet the controversy surrounding Neymar’s dismissal has shifted attention away from the result and towards the conduct of the players and the role of video technology in refereeing decisions.

For Neymar, the incident adds another chapter to a career in which moments of individual brilliance have frequently been accompanied by scrutiny over his behaviour on the pitch. Whether he considers the dismissal unfair or not, the immediate consequence is clear: Santos must prepare for important upcoming matches without him.
