Chelsea Cross Century Mark for Premier League Red Cards
Chelsea entered an unwelcome chapter in English football history after crossing the milestone of one hundred red cards in the Premier League. The landmark moment unfolded during a disappointing two-nil defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, where Cole Palmer received the first dismissal of his professional career.
The twenty-four-year-old English winger, who previously made forty-one appearances for Manchester City before featuring in one hundred and forty-one matches for Chelsea, was sent off in the eightieth minute after receiving a second yellow card. Palmer’s departure compounded Chelsea’s frustrations on the pitch while simultaneously registering the club’s hundredth red card in the competition’s history.
This dubious distinction places the West London club alongside Everton and Arsenal, both of which had already surpassed the century mark for dismissals in the era of the modern top flight. Official Premier League statistics reveal that several other clubs are also approaching three figures. Newcastle United currently sit closest behind Chelsea, with their players accumulating ninety-six red cards over the years.
By contrast, the two main Manchester clubs maintain a relatively cleaner disciplinary record in this regard. Manchester City players have collected seventy-eight red cards throughout their Premier League tenure, whilst Manchester United follow closely behind with seventy-seven dismissals, leaving both clubs well short of the hundred mark.
Onfield discipline remains a major talking point in the current Premier League campaign. By twenty-four October, twelve different players had already been sent off across the league. Brentford and Sunderland lead the current season’s dismissal tally, having seen two players sent off each. While Palmer’s red card represents Chelsea’s first dismissal of the ongoing campaign, the club’s overall disciplinary record in recent times has been a persistent area of concern.
During the 2025-26 Premier League season, Chelsea topped the disciplinary charts after receiving eight red cards, more than any other side in the division. However, the all-time record for the most dismissals in a single Premier League season remains held elsewhere. Sunderland during the 2009-10 campaign and Queens Park Rangers in the 2011-12 season both set the record with nine red cards each in a single campaign.
