Sonargaon University Edges Past ULAB in ABG Cup Thriller

From the outset, both sides demonstrated an uncompromising hunger for dominance. The tempo was frantic, characterised by swift transitions and aggressive pressing as players battled fiercely for territorial control. Neither team was willing to cede an inch, turning the pitch into a fierce theatre of tactical play and athletic commitment.

The decisive breakthrough arrived swiftly in the opening exchanges. In the sixth minute, ULAB conceded a free-kick just outside their penalty area, offering Sonargaon a promising scoring opportunity. Although the initial curling effort was smartly beaten away by the ULAB goalkeeper, the ensuing corner kick spelled disaster for the defence. Rising high amidst a crowded penalty box, Rashed met the delivery with a precise, powerful header, steering the ball firmly into the net to hand Sonargaon a crucial lead in the seventh minute.

Armed with the advantage, Sonargaon managed the remainder of the first half with disciplined organisation, heading into the interval with their slender lead intact.

The second half witnessed a relentless wave of attacks from ULAB, who returned from the dressing room with renewed urgency. Desperate to restore parity, they flooded the flanks and bombarded the Sonargaon penalty box with searching crosses. Yet, Sonargaon’s defensive unit stood firm, absorbing the intense pressure with commendable composure while their goalkeeper thwarted every probing attempt. Although Sonargaon launched several counter-attacks of their own to secure a safety cushion, the scoreline remained unaltered.

When the final whistle echoed across the arena, Sonargaon University secured a hard-earned 1-0 victory, bagging all three points in their opening Group B fixture. Building upon their prior success in cricket, this spirited football triumph establishes a brilliant tone for Sonargaon’s campaign in the tournament.
