With the score locked at 2–2 and the final whistle moments away, João Neves produced a moment of brilliance to decide the match. His powerful header deep into injury time handed Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) a thrilling 3–2 victory over Olympique Lyon in Sunday night’s Ligue 1 encounter.
The champions had to dig deep at Lyon’s Groupama Stadium, with goals coming from Warren Zaïre-Emery, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Neves. For the hosts, Afonso Moreira and Ainsley Maitland-Niles found the net but couldn’t prevent defeat.
| Team | Played | Wins | Draws | Losses | Points | Position |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paris Saint-Germain | 12 | 8 | 3 | 1 | 27 | 1st |
| Olympique Lyon | 12 | 5 | 5 | 2 | 20 | 7th |
The visitors struck first in the 26th minute. From deep in his own half, Vitinha lofted a long pass forward to Zaïre-Emery, who controlled it superbly before slotting the ball past the keeper with a precise finish into the bottom corner.
Lyon, however, hit back just four minutes later. A perfectly weighted through ball split the PSG defence, allowing Moreira to equalise with a calm finish. Yet PSG restored their lead in the 33rd minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia capitalised on a defensive mistake and drilled the ball home with authority.
The second half brought more drama. Only five minutes after the restart, Lyon levelled again when Maitland-Niles lifted a clever lob over the advancing goalkeeper. The match then turned into an end-to-end contest, with both sides pushing desperately for a winner but struggling to convert their chances.
In the third minute of added time, Lyon’s Argentine midfielder Nicolás Tagliafico was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, leaving the hosts with ten men. Just two minutes later, PSG made them pay. From a well-delivered corner, João Neves rose highest to glance a superb header into the net, sealing a last-gasp victory for the Parisians.
The win keeps PSG comfortably at the top of the Ligue 1 table with 27 points from 12 matches, maintaining their dominance under Luis Enrique. Lyon, meanwhile, remain in seventh place on 20 points and will rue missed opportunities.
After the match, PSG boss Luis Enrique praised his side’s perseverance:
“We kept believing until the very last moment. This team showed great resilience and spirit, and João’s goal was a reward for that attitude.”
Neves, the hero of the night, added:
“It was an incredible feeling to score in such a crucial moment. We fought until the end, and this victory will give us huge confidence for the upcoming fixtures.”
PSG’s next challenge comes on 23 November when they face RC Lens, as they look to continue their fine run at the summit of French football.
