BCB President’s Apology Shocks Cricket Media After Dhaka Snub

The Bangladesh Cricket Conference, hosted at Hotel Sonargaon in Dhaka on 9–10 November, was designed as a landmark event to celebrate the nation’s cricketing progress and the 25th anniversary of Bangladesh achieving Test status. While the two-day gathering largely succeeded in highlighting the sport’s grassroots initiatives, it concluded amid controversy due to a mismanaged closing ceremony.

The event drew an impressive array of attendees, including cricket coaches, divisional and district councillors, women entrepreneurs, and sports officials representing all eight divisions and 64 districts. It was widely commended for spotlighting cricket development at the local level, especially in districts where the game is growing rapidly.

However, the celebrations were overshadowed on the final day when a number of invited journalists were denied access to the closing ceremony. The incident sparked immediate criticism from members of the media, who argued that such exclusion undermined the transparency and inclusiveness of the event.

In response, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Aminul Islam issued a formal apology via a video message on the board’s official Facebook page. Aminul acknowledged the error, explaining that the issue arose from delays and poor coordination, despite the media being personally invited by him.

“On 10 November, during the closing ceremony of the Bangladesh Cricket Conference, an unfortunate incident occurred. Many members of the media were not treated with the respect they deserved due to mismanagement. I take full responsibility and apologise sincerely,” Aminul stated.

He emphasised the pivotal role of journalists in Bangladesh cricket, saying, “The media has always been one of our strongest partners. We made a mistake, and we will learn from it. I hope journalists will continue to support Bangladesh cricket as we strive to reach greater heights.”

The BCB has pledged to implement stricter coordination protocols to prevent similar issues at future events. Despite the controversy, the conference was praised for its focus on nurturing talent at district and grassroots levels and for celebrating 25 years of Bangladesh’s journey as a Test-playing nation.
