Dhaka is gearing up to host the Women’s Kabaddi World Cup for the very first time, but the tournament has already faced unexpected drama. Initially planned as a 13-nation competition, the event has now been reduced to 12 teams after Argentina announced their withdrawal at the last moment. The confirmation came through the International Kabaddi Federation, and was later acknowledged by SM Nowaz Sohag, the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Kabaddi Federation.
According to Sohag, Bangladesh—as the host nation—was prepared to provide accommodation and all local facilities for every visiting team, while travel arrangements were under the responsibility of the International Kabaddi Federation. “Perhaps there has been some issue between the federation and Argentina regarding participation,” he said, adding that the exact reason was not disclosed but the decision is final.
The remaining 12 teams include Bangladesh, India, Chinese Taipei, Germany, the Netherlands, Iran, Japan, Kenya, South Korea, Nepal, Thailand, Uganda and Zanzibar. Zanzibar’s squad has already arrived in Dhaka, and two more teams are scheduled to reach tonight. Despite Argentina’s sudden exit, organisers confirm that preparations are proceeding smoothly.
The Women’s World Cup will take place at the Shaheed Sohrawardi Indoor Stadium in Mirpur from 17 to 25 November. The last time a Women’s Kabaddi World Cup was held was 13 years ago in Bihar, India, making this Dhaka event a significant milestone for the sport. With global excitement growing and the host nation ready to welcome the participants, the tournament promises to bring fast-paced kabaddi back into the international spotlight.
