Argentina refused to capitulate, and late in the game Fernando Kloster scored a crucial equaliser to level the score at 2-2, forcing the match into a tense penalty shootout. In the ensuing shootout, Mexico edged out Argentina 5-4, bringing an end to the Albiceleste’s World Cup campaign at the knockout stage. Mexico will now face Portugal in the round of sixteen.
Elsewhere on the same evening, Brazil faced Paraguay in another second-round encounter. The match remained goalless after regular time, pushing the contest into a penalty shootout. After the first five penalties ended in stalemate, Brazil’s goalkeeper emerged as the hero in sudden death, saving two consecutive Paraguayan shots and securing victory for the Seleção. Brazil will now meet France in the next round.
The results underscored the high level of competition at the U-17 World Cup, where mental fortitude, penalty composure, and decisive moments often determine a team’s fate. While Argentina’s promising campaign ended in heartbreak, Brazil’s young squad demonstrated resilience and poise, keeping their hopes of lifting the trophy very much alive.
