Cabrera Keeps Faith in Mitul

Following the suspension of Anisur Rahman Zico, Javier Cabrera has consistently relied on young goalkeeper Mitul Marma as Bangladesh’s first-choice option. Until the home match against Singapore in Dhaka, the Abahani Dhaka shot-stopper had largely justified his coach’s confidence. However, Mitul’s form took a dip after he received devastating personal news: the death of his elder brother on the eve of the Singapore fixture.

Understandably shaken, the 21-year-old struggled to perform at his usual level. Two costly errors led to Bangladesh conceding twice, resulting in a painful defeat. The effects lingered, as Mitul appeared short of confidence during the subsequent match against Hong Kong. Most recently, against Nepal, another misjudgement at the back allowed the opponents to equalise late in the game—forcing Bangladesh to settle for a draw in a match they were poised to win.

These repeated mistakes have sparked widespread debate among supporters and analysts about whether Mitul should remain in the starting XI. Some have suggested that Mehedi Hasan Shravon or Sujon Hossain deserves an opportunity. Yet, ahead of today’s crucial Asian Cup qualifier against India, Cabrera has made his stance clear: Mitul will start.

In the press conference, Cabrera emphasised his trust in the young goalkeeper. Mitul has played all four Asian Cup qualifying matches, conceding seven goals. He also featured in the friendly against Nepal on 13 November. After the Singapore match, he took to social media to apologise to fans, explaining that he had tried to focus on giving his best despite the grief of losing his brother. “It was a very difficult time,” he wrote, “and I hope you will forgive my mistakes.”

Despite recent criticism, Mitul has returned to the pitch determined to move forward. Cabrera continues to back him, recognising both his potential and his commitment. With 18 international caps already at just 21 years of age, tonight’s match could be a defining moment in Mitul’s young career.
