Bangladesh Stun India to End 22-Year Drought

Bangladesh produced one of their most disciplined performances in recent memory as they edged India 1–0 in an AFC Asian Cup Qualifier, ending a 22-year absence of victory against their South Asian rivals. The result reflects both tactical maturity and the growing influence of new recruits such as Hamza Choudhury and Shamit Shome.

The match turned on a brilliantly executed counter-attack in the 11th minute. Starting deep within their own half, Bangladesh transitioned with pace as Morsalin supplied Rakib Hossain and continued his forward run. Rakib’s measured cut-back found Morsalin inside the area, where he manoeuvred past Akash Mishra before finishing calmly past Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. It was a goal crafted with European-level precision—unsurprising given the involvement of Bangladesh’s UK-born midfielder Hamza.

Following the goal, Bangladesh adopted a compact defensive block, forcing India to play through crowded central channels. Sohel Rana and Shomit Shome took control of midfield, intercepting passing lanes and launching quick transitions. Despite several promising crosses from Rakib and Fahim, a second goal remained elusive.

Defensively, Bangladesh were resolute. A critical moment arrived when a misjudged back-pass nearly gifted India an equaliser, only for Hamza to head clear under pressure. Later, a confrontation between Topu Barman and Vikram momentarily disrupted the rhythm, yet Bangladesh maintained discipline.

India’s best spell came in the opening minutes of the second half, but their forwards failed to test Mitul sufficiently. Bangladesh responded with substitutions that strengthened the defensive structure while preserving counter-attacking potential.

In the dying minutes, India intensified their assaults, but the Bangladeshi defence—coordinated and remarkably composed—absorbed every wave. When the whistle blew, players celebrated a victory that was as strategic as it was emotional.

The win places Bangladesh on five points in the qualifiers and symbolises a shift in regional football dynamics. More importantly, it restores belief in a team long deprived of results matching their effort.
