Kylian Mbappé Seeks €260m from PSG as Club Counters with €440m Claim

More than sixteen months have passed since Kylian Mbappé’s high-profile transfer from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to Real Madrid, yet the legal battle between the French forward and his former club shows no sign of ending. On the contrary, the dispute appears to be growing increasingly complex, with Mbappé now demanding €260 million in compensation from PSG. In response, PSG has reportedly counterclaimed, insisting they are entitled to €440 million from the star striker. Both sides have levelled allegations of contract breaches, bad faith, and misconduct against one another.

The case is currently being heard at the Paris Labour Court, with the most recent hearing taking place on Monday. According to ESPN, Mbappé was not present at the hearing, but his legal team has escalated his claim from an initial €55 million to €260 million. His lawyers argue that the contract signed with PSG should be treated as permanent rather than fixed-term, entitling him to full compensation, outstanding wages, bonuses, and mandatory damages following an alleged wrongful dismissal. They emphasise that “Kylian Mbappé is not seeking anything beyond what any employee would be legally entitled to.”

Mbappé’s legal team has also accused PSG of moral harassment, imposing unofficial duties, and failing in their responsibilities as an employer. In 2023, when he informed the club he would not extend his contract, he was reportedly sidelined, excluded from the pre-season tour, and forced to train with fringe players—a practice referred to under French labour law as “luffing.”

PSG, in turn, has dismissed these allegations and claims that Mbappé acted in bad faith during the final year of his contract, causing significant financial and reputational damage. The club asserts that Mbappé secretly decided not to extend his deal for almost 11 months, preventing any potential transfer. Furthermore, PSG contends that an August 2023 agreement regarding wage adjustments was deliberately ignored by the player.

The French champions also maintain that Mbappé participated in over 94% of official matches during the disputed season and that all sporting decisions were made by the club’s coach, now a Champions League winner.

With both sides entrenched in court, the outcome of this unprecedented legal standoff remains uncertain, leaving fans and observers eagerly awaiting the verdict.
