Melbourne Renegades delivered a masterclass in bowling and batting to thrash Sydney Thunder by eight wickets at Drummoyne Oval, asserting themselves as genuine contenders in WBBL 2025. The emphatic victory not only lifted the Renegades to second place in the table but also completed a season double over a struggling Thunder side. The Thunder have now suffered four consecutive defeats, leaving them deep in trouble.
Thunder looked set to take control early, with Georgia Voll showing intent by smashing two early boundaries off Milly Illingworth. Yet the initial momentum proved short-lived, as Illingworth regained control to dismiss Voll, sparking a top-order collapse.
Chais Bekker compounded the damage, removing captain Phoebe Litchfield and Tahlia Wilson in consecutive overs, leaving Thunder reeling. England international Alice Capsey tightened the noose further with two key wickets in the 10th over, signalling the Renegades’ total dominance.
The final blows were delivered by leg-spinner Georgia Wareham, who decimated the lower middle order with figures of 3 for 12, while Sophie Molineux wrapped up the innings with a sharp stumping to Shabnim Ismail. Thunder’s innings closed at a paltry 64 in just 17 overs, with only Heather Knight (20) and Anika Learoyd (13) reaching double figures.
Chasing such a modest target, the Renegades were briefly unsettled when Courtney Webb and Emma de Broughe fell cheaply. However, Molineux and Capsey calmly guided the chase, adding boundaries at regular intervals and finishing the innings inside 11.1 overs. Molineux ended unbeaten on 29 from 22 balls, while Capsey contributed 24 off 20.
The result sent a clear message to the rest of the league: Melbourne Renegades are in form and poised to challenge for the title, while Sydney Thunder must urgently reassess their batting order and team strategy.
