Australian left-handed opener Usman Khawaja has come under scrutiny from Cricket Australia (CA) for his comments about the Perth Test pitch. The first Ashes Test concluded in just two days with Australia thrashing England. Yet, Khawaja criticised the pitch for giving excessive advantage to fast bowlers.
During a fundraising event for his foundation, Khawaja stated,
“On the first day, 19 wickets fell, 20 players were hit by the ball. And this is called a great wicket! Even Steve Smith struggled with batting. The first-day wicket was terrible.”
The ICC, however, rated the pitch as “Very Good”. Khawaja’s public comments were not well-received by Cricket Australia. Ahead of the second Test in Brisbane, the CA is expected to meet Khawaja to explain his remarks. If unsatisfactory, disciplinary action may follow.
Khawaja had made a strong performance in Perth despite the pitch challenges, but his outspoken criticism may put him in a difficult position with the administration.
