Thumbs Up: Khawaja Passes Fitness Test Ahead of Gabba Ashes Clash

Usman Khawaja has given Australia a welcome boost ahead of the second Ashes Test at the Gabba, passing a comprehensive fitness test and signalling that he is ready to contest for his place in the team. The experienced left-hander, who suffered from back spasms during the Perth Test, demonstrated that he is fully prepared for the rigours of top-level Test cricket.

On Monday afternoon, Khawaja underwent a series of fitness and agility drills under the watchful eye of team physiotherapist Nick Jones. The optional training session saw him complete shuttle runs, sidesteps, and squats over a roughly 25-minute period, all designed to test his mobility, strength, and endurance. At one stage, he even offered Jones a reassuring thumbs up, highlighting his confidence and determination to return to peak condition.

Following the drills, Khawaja collected his equipment and moved to the nets, where he embarked on his first batting session since Perth. Under the guidance of assistant coach Michael Di Venuto, he faced a series of throwdowns, allowing him to rebuild his timing and batting rhythm ahead of the crucial Gabba encounter.

Earlier in the nets, Pat Cummins continued his comeback from a back problem, showcasing impressive rhythm and pace. One delivery in particular left Marnus Labuschagne completely exposed, as the ball moved late away from the batsman at high speed.

Khawaja’s successful fitness test provides reassurance for the Australian camp, which has been monitoring the condition of several key players following the first Test. With both Khawaja and Cummins appearing to be in strong form, Australia can enter the Gabba Test with renewed confidence, hoping to maintain their strong home advantage and mount a serious challenge for Ashes dominance.
