After weeks of anticipation, Indian cricket fans finally have good news—Hardik Pandya is all set to return to T20I action. His name is expected to feature prominently when the selectors announce the squad for the South Africa series. But while one star is returning, another may remain on the sidelines, as Shubman Gill continues to recover from a neck injury.
Hardik’s return has been a long time coming. After picking up a quadricep injury during the Asia Cup in September, he had been out of action for over two months. However, his comeback match for Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy proved he is fully ready. In a remarkable performance, he bowled four overs, took a wicket, and then smashed a brilliant unbeaten 77, leading Baroda to victory. The innings not only reassured fans but also the selectors, who have been looking for stability in the allrounder department.
On the other side of the story is Shubman Gill—India’s vice-captain in T20Is—whose injury remains a concern. Gill had injured his neck in the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata. His injury, diagnosed as a pinched nerve, has forced him out of two Tests and the ongoing ODI series. The recovery timeline suggests he may not be ready for the T20Is starting December 9.
Gill has now checked into the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for intensive rehabilitation. The team management is hopeful, but realistic—his chances of returning in time are slim.
If Gill is unavailable, India must decide on a new partner for Abhishek Sharma at the top. Sanju Samson, who had limited chances in the recent Australia series, is one option. Another is Yashasvi Jaiswal, whose explosive batting style could provide early momentum. Both offer different strengths, and the choice could shape India’s approach in the series.
The selectors are also considering giving Riyan Parag another opportunity. Parag has been in excellent domestic form and is currently leading Assam in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, making him a viable candidate for the 15-member squad.
India’s T20I series against South Africa begins in Cuttack on December 9 and continues across New Chandigarh, Dharamsala, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad. Under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, India will enter the series as the world’s top-ranked T20I side, whereas South Africa are ranked fifth.
With the T20 World Cup approaching, this series will be crucial for India to refine their squad and combinations. Hardik’s return offers a major boost—but Gill’s absence could open the door for new talents to step into the spotlight.
