The countdown is on before it becomes clear which teams are in which groups on football’s grandest stage. The 2026 World Cup will kick off in June, with the group draw taking place Friday night in Washington. The excitement is palpable among both fans and players.
Even Argentina’s camp is buzzing with anticipation. Midfielder Rodrigo De Paul told Argentine journalist Gaston Edul that he recently discussed the draw and preparations with Lionel Messi.
De Paul said, ‘I was discussing schedules and preparations with Leo. In club football, draws happen suddenly, so it feels a little unprepared. But the World Cup draw is completely different and special. Naturally, there are expectations about which group we will be in and who we will play against.’ He added that the draw marks the official start of the tournament.
After ending a long drought in the Qatar World Cup, Argentina aims to continue that success under Messi’s leadership. De Paul stated, ‘We will give our best. Our qualifying performance has set expectations. We will compete to defend the trophy, even though it will not be easy.’
He added, ‘If the team plays united and the environment is similar to 2022, the journey will be smoother. I hope everyone stays together and gives their maximum effort.’
De Paul joined Inter Miami this year. Ahead of the World Cup, the MLS final on Saturday will see Messi and De Paul’s Miami face Vancouver Whitecaps. Messi’s participation in the World Cup remains uncertain. Whether he plays or not, he will remain central to Argentina’s plans.
