Former Bangladesh national coach Russell Domingo has accepted a two-year contract to serve as the head coach of Hampshire County Cricket Club. This appointment places the South African at the heart of English county cricket, a platform he has long admired for its competitive nature and professional depth.
Domingo’s coaching responsibilities will extend beyond England. Since 2023, he has been working with the Lions, a leading domestic side based in Johannesburg. He will continue in that role, splitting his time between the two teams, in what has become a modern and flexible approach to professional cricket coaching.
Sources have confirmed that Domingo may also be involved in the Pakistan Super League, adding another high-profile assignment to his annual workload. His experience and calm leadership style have made him a sought-after figure in both domestic and franchise cricket.
At Hampshire, Domingo replaces Adrian Birrell, a respected South African coach who helped build a strong foundation at the club. Hampshire have also added two more experienced coaches to the staff. Shane Burger, who recently worked with the Scotland national team, will take over as bowling coach. Meanwhile, former West Indies captain Jimmy Adams joins as batting coach.
Russell Domingo, now 51, first rose to international prominence when he became South Africa’s head coach in 2012. His term included several significant campaigns in Test and white-ball cricket. In 2019, he took charge of the Bangladesh national team, steering them for three years during which the Tigers secured historic achievements, including a landmark Test win against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui.
During his Bangladesh tenure, Domingo was praised for helping nurture young players such as Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto, both of whom have since developed into key figures in the national setup. His structured coaching philosophy, emphasis on discipline and analytical preparation were seen as central to Bangladesh’s progress during that period.
Hampshire’s decision to bring in Domingo reflects the club’s ambition to refine its performance programmes and maintain competitiveness across formats. The county has long been regarded as one of England’s most stable professional sides, and the addition of Domingo signals a renewed drive for elite results.
Domingo himself has expressed enthusiasm about working in the English system, which he views as a rich environment for talent development. He is expected to focus heavily on building depth within the squad, improving match preparedness and introducing modern strategic approaches.
Fans and analysts are already speculating on how Domingo’s global experience will shape Hampshire’s approach to the upcoming season. With a strong coaching trio—Domingo, Burger and Adams—the club now boasts a diverse and well-rounded technical staff equipped to guide both young cricketers and seasoned professionals.
As he prepares to divide his time between two continents, Domingo’s appointment underscores the increasingly global nature of modern cricket coaching and reaffirms his position as one of the sport’s leading managerial minds.
