LONDON, March 12, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Sheffield United moved to the top of the Championship despite conceding a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at home to Bristol City on Tuesday.
Burnley also failed to capitalise on the opportunity to leapfrog Leeds into second place after being held to a 1-1 draw by West Bromwich Albion.
Sheffield United had taken the lead in the second half through Tyrese Campbell, but Bristol City’s Mark Sykes struck a last-minute equaliser to boost the visitors’ push for a playoff spot.
“I don’t think it was anything they didn’t deserve really. They controlled the game in the first half,” commented Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder.
The draw lifted Sheffield United to the top of the table, just one point ahead of Leeds, who will host Millwall on Wednesday.
Burnley’s impressive run of seven consecutive home clean sheets came to an end when West Brom’s John Swift converted a free-kick to give the Baggies the lead at Turf Moor. Zian Flemming responded swiftly, capitalising on a mistake by West Brom goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith to equalise.
However, Burnley’s night ended on a sour note, as defender CJ Egan-Riley and manager Scott Parker were both sent off after the final whistle following an incident in which Egan-Riley appeared to kick William Lankshear.
In other Championship action, Sunderland’s promotion hopes were boosted by Romaine Mundle’s stunning equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Preston at the Stadium of Light, cancelling out Emil Riis’ 65th-minute opener.
Derby County, under Frank Lampard’s leadership, boosted their survival chances with a 2-0 victory over high-flying Coventry, thanks to goals from Matt Clarke and Marcus Harness.
Middlesbrough edged closer to the playoff spots, with Tommy Conway and Anfernee Dijksteel finding the net in a 2-1 victory over QPR.
Sheffield Wednesday kept their playoff ambitions alive with a superb second-half comeback, defeating Norwich 3-2 at Carrow Road.
Meanwhile, Luton Town secured a vital 2-1 victory over Cardiff in their relegation battle, though the match was overshadowed by an injury to Wales captain Aaron Ramsey, which threatens his participation in World Cup qualifying matches.
