South Africa Level Series with Commanding Win Over India

South Africa produced a dominant all-round performance in New Chandigarh to defeat India by 51 runs, levelling the five-match T20I series 1–1. What initially appeared to be a routine finish for the hosts turned into a dramatic collapse, leaving India stunned and South Africa celebrating a convincing victory.

A Chase That Briefly Looked Possible

With 18 balls remaining, India still required 72 runs, a target bordering on impossible in most circumstances. Yet the explosive stroke-play of Tilak Varma and Jitesh Sharma, who smashed 15 runs off just four deliveries, momentarily rekindled hope. Even the commentators dared to believe that the contest might still have life left in it—especially with India holding five wickets in hand.

But the optimism was short-lived.

India’s chase unravelled spectacularly as the next five wickets tumbled for just five runs, leaving the team all out for 162 in 19.1 overs. What had seemed a respectable challenge turned into a chaotic collapse no one had foreseen.

South Africa’s Batting Powerhouse

Earlier, having been put in to bat, South Africa posted an imposing 213 for 4.

The cornerstone of the innings was a majestic knock from Quinton de Kock, who hammered 90 off 46 balls, featuring 5 fours and 7 sixes. His authoritative striking set the tone and destabilised India’s bowling attack early.

Late fireworks from:

  • Donovan Ferreira (30 off 16)*

  • David Miller (20 off 12)*

ensured South Africa crossed the 200-run mark with ease.

India’s Spirited Yet Insufficient Response

India’s hopes rested heavily on Tilak Varma, who struck a scintillating 62 off 34 balls, including five sixes and two boundaries. He was the lone substantial contributor in what proved to be a faltering batting display.

Jitesh Sharma’s quickfire 27 off 17 briefly revived belief before his dismissal off Lutho Sipamla triggered the terminal collapse.

In a decisive 19th over, Ottneil Baartman ripped through India’s lower order, removing Shivam Dube, Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakravarthy within six balls. Tilak Varma’s dismissal to Lungi Ngidi on the first ball of the final over sealed India’s fate.
