Rovman Powell Reflects on Successful West Indies T20I Captaincy Stint

Rovman Powell has expressed pride in his tenure as West Indies T20I captain, describing it as “pretty successful” and “very good”. During his leadership from March 2023 to December 2024, Powell guided the side from ninth to third in the world rankings, including at the 2024 T20 World Cup, which the West Indies co-hosted with the United States.

“I set out to play for West Indies, and now I’ve played over 100 T20I matches—107 in total,” Powell told ESPNcricinfo during a media interaction organised by Dubai Capitals in the ongoing ILT20. “Those little milestones—moving the team up the rankings, winning franchise titles globally—are moments you feel proud about.”

Powell captained the side in 37 T20Is, succeeding Nicholas Pooran, and credits his leadership experience with fostering deeper interactions with players across franchise leagues worldwide. “As a captain, you observe players, understand how they can contribute to West Indies cricket, and encourage healthy discussions about their prospects,” he said.

As a middle-order batter, Powell prefers to bat at No. 5, where he believes he can make the most meaningful impact. “At No. 5, you can construct an innings rather than just hit a few balls at the end. It allows you to balance consistency with aggression,” he explained. Over 105 innings at No. 5, Powell has scored 2,069 runs at a strike rate of 146.11, compared with 75 innings at No. 6.

With a packed schedule across international and franchise cricket, Powell selects tournaments that do not clash with West Indies commitments. “I evaluate performances by competition, not match by match. What matters is making meaningful contributions—winning games when given the opportunity,” he said.

Now aged 32, Powell has been succeeded as T20I captain by Shai Hope, but his focus remains on continuing to excel for West Indies and in franchise leagues. Retained by KKR in the upcoming IPL, his next major assignment will be the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka from 7 February, where he hopes to help the team progress beyond previous knockouts.

Powell’s reflections underline his belief in measured, strategic batting, leadership development, and balancing international and franchise cricket commitments—qualities that have made him a mainstay of West Indies T20 cricket.
