Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez has once again underlined the enduring importance of Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting that the national side remains deeply shaped by the presence of its most iconic footballer. According to Martínez, Ronaldo’s influence stretches far beyond goals and statistics; it is embedded in the very rhythm, psychology and tactical balance of the team.

Now 40 years old, Ronaldo continues to perform at the highest level despite plying his trade in the Saudi Pro League. While his club career has entered a new phase, his relevance to the Portugal national team has not diminished in the slightest. With an extraordinary career tally of around 950 goals, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is widely expected to lead Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup—an event Ronaldo himself has hinted will be the final World Cup of his illustrious journey.

Martínez also addressed the persistent scrutiny surrounding Ronaldo’s role and age. “Everyone has an opinion about Cristiano, but many do not truly analyse the game,” he said. “Within our squad, every player is assessed equally. At this moment, Cristiano’s mentality and professionalism are nothing short of exemplary.”

Beyond tactics and goals, Martínez highlighted Ronaldo’s influence across generations of players. Younger footballers, in particular, benefit from his standards and work ethic. “What Ronaldo brings into the national team—motivation, responsibility and respect—is unique,” the coach noted. “He sets the tone every single day.”
