Neymar’s New Santos Deal Before World Cup

Neymar’s renewed contract with Santos had been anticipated for weeks; only the formal confirmation was missing. That confirmation has now arrived, with the Brazilian forward committing himself to the historic club for another 12 months. While the agreement strengthens Santos on the pitch, its wider significance lies in what it suggests about Neymar’s ambitions ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking after the announcement, Neymar framed the decision in emotional and symbolic terms. “2026 is here,” he said. “My destiny could have been different, but Santos is my place. Here I feel safe and happy, like I’ve come home. This is where I want to fulfil my remaining dreams.” The words underline both personal attachment and a clear professional objective: restoring his fitness, form and relevance at the highest level of international football.

At present, Neymar is completing rehabilitation following arthroscopic surgery on his left foot. Earlier this week, he visited the Rei Pelé Training Centre with his father and underwent physiotherapy at the club’s medical facilities. According to those close to the process, he is expected to be fully fit by the end of January, with a return to competitive action projected for early February—crucial timing given the shrinking window before World Cup squad decisions begin to take shape.

This new agreement represents Neymar’s third spell under contract with Santos since his return. He initially rejoined the club in January last year on a six-month deal, extended it for a further six months in June, and has now settled on a full one-year commitment after weeks of negotiation. With less than six months to go before the World Cup, the message is unmistakable: Santos will be Neymar’s platform to fight his way back into the Brazil national team.

Neymar last appeared for Brazil in October 2023. Since then, injuries have repeatedly stalled his comeback. National coach Carlo Ancelotti has made his stance clear: reputation alone will not earn selection. Full fitness and consistent performances are non-negotiable, regardless of the player’s stature. Consequently, Neymar must use upcoming domestic fixtures to demonstrate not only technical quality but also physical resilience.

There is little doubt about Neymar’s talent or influence. Any coach would welcome a fully fit Neymar. The difficulty, however, lies precisely in that condition. Throughout his career, he has battled injuries as much as opposition defences. The serious setback suffered more than two years ago continues to cast a long shadow, raising legitimate questions about whether he can endure the demands of a major tournament.

For now, the task is clear: complete rehabilitation, return without relapse, and accumulate match minutes. Success on those fronts will open the door to Brazil’s pre-tournament friendlies, where scrutiny will intensify. Playing in the Brazilian league—widely regarded as less demanding than Europe’s top five leagues—means Ancelotti is likely to assess Neymar’s performances with particular caution.

Ultimately, adapting tactically, performing consistently and integrating into Ancelotti’s evolving Brazil side are challenges Neymar knows well. The greatest test remains sustaining fitness—something not entirely within his control. If his body holds and fortune favours him, this Santos contract may yet prove to be the decisive step in one final World Cup pursuit.
