Cristiano Ronaldo’s situation in the Saudi Pro League remains mired in uncertainty, as the Portuguese superstar continues to abstain from playing amid unresolved concerns over Al-Nassr’s management. With no clear assurances forthcoming regarding structural changes within the club, Ronaldo has steadfastly decided to boycott his second consecutive league match.
The player’s stance is reportedly linked to dissatisfaction with the role of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) in club operations. According to ESPN, if the PIF does not provide concrete guarantees within the coming weeks, Ronaldo may formally request a transfer away from Al-Nassr at the end of the season in June.
The PIF exerts control over four of Saudi Arabia’s leading clubs: Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Ahli. Ronaldo’s grievance centres on the perception that Al-Hilal and other rival clubs are receiving greater financial backing than Al-Nassr.
This issue became particularly prominent during the recent attempted transfer of Karim Benzema from Al-Ittihad to Al-Hilal, which Ronaldo reportedly tried to prevent. He believed that the move would make Al-Hilal’s path to domestic silverware significantly easier.
As part of his protest, Ronaldo boycotted Al-Nassr’s 1–0 league victory over Al-Riyadh on Monday, although Benzema’s signing with Al-Hilal went ahead regardless.
Ronaldo has maintained an active presence on social media, sharing training images; however, he was notably absent from official training photos released by Al-Nassr on Wednesday via their X (formerly Twitter) account.
Another source of frustration for Ronaldo is the recent restructuring within Al-Nassr. Following last month’s board meeting, Sporting Director Simao Coutinho and CEO Jose Semedo had their powers curtailed, a move that reportedly angered the forward. Additionally, budget cuts have limited the club’s ability to attract top-tier talent, whereas Al-Hilal has enjoyed substantial financial support, largely funded by Saudi Crown Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal Al Saud. Benzema’s transfer, along with other signings during the current window, was financed directly by the Crown Prince, according to ESPN.
Ronaldo has emphasised that his return to the pitch depends on two key assurances: the restoration of management authority at Al-Nassr and a guarantee that no future interference will occur during transfer windows.
Since joining Al-Nassr in 2022, Ronaldo has yet to secure a major trophy with the club. He renewed his contract last summer until June 2027, which includes a €50 million release clause.
Al-Nassr faces Al-Ittihad in the league on Friday, but Ronaldo’s participation in the match remains uncertain.
