Malaysia has been eliminated from contention for the 2027 Asian Cup following a controversial disciplinary decision by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The governing body annulled two of Malaysia’s victories in the qualification rounds against Nepal and Vietnam, citing the fielding of ineligible players. According to the AFC, these footballers were not eligible to represent the Malaysian national team, making the original match results invalid.
In the third round of the qualifiers, Malaysia had defeated Nepal and Vietnam by identical 3-0 scorelines. However, the AFC’s ruling stripped the national team of these wins, leaving Malaysia six points behind group leaders Vietnam in Group F. Each of the four teams in the group has one remaining match to play, but Malaysia’s chances of securing the top position—and thus qualifying for the Asian Cup finals—have effectively ended. Vietnam, with five matches played and 15 points accumulated, has officially secured its spot in the tournament.
The AFC has also imposed a USD 50,000 fine on the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), which must be paid within 30 days. In response, the Malaysian Football Federation issued a statement on its official website, affirming that further actions will be determined upon receipt of the AFC’s official documentation.
Earlier this month, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) partially upheld FIFA’s sanctions relating to the case. Seven Malaysian players who participated using falsified citizenship documents were suspended from official matches for 12 months. CAS also confirmed that FAM must pay a fine of 350,000 Swiss francs (approximately USD 444,275), originally levied by FIFA.
Among the suspended players is central defender Facundo Garses, who plays for Spanish club Deportivo Alavés. Last September, FIFA had banned these seven players for one year after investigations revealed that falsified documents had been used to allow them to represent Malaysia in the Asian Cup qualifiers, including the match against Vietnam.
Summary of Annulled Matches
| Date | Opponent | Original Result | Reason for Annulment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third Round | Nepal | Malaysia 3–0 Nepal | Fielding ineligible players |
| Third Round | Vietnam | Malaysia 3–0 Vietnam | Fielding ineligible players |
The AFC and CAS rulings underline the strict governance surrounding player eligibility and documentation in international football. Malaysia’s national team now faces a period of rebuilding, both on and off the field, as it contemplates the repercussions of these regulatory breaches.
