While millions across Bangladesh celebrated Eid al-Fitr with family gatherings and festivity, the nation’s footballers spent the day travelling, resting, and preparing for pivotal international fixtures. From the senior national side to youth teams, this year’s Eid was defined by professional commitment rather than traditional celebrations.
The Bangladesh national football team, led by captain Jamal Bhuyan, departed for Hanoi on the eve of Eid, arriving early the following morning. Exhausted from overnight travel, the squad spent Eid quietly at their hotel. Team manager Amer Khan confirmed that players were granted a rest day, with full training set to resume the following day ahead of their next fixtures.
Bangladesh are scheduled to face Vietnam in an international friendly on 26 March, serving as preparation for their final AFC Asian Cup qualifying match. Following the Vietnam game, the squad will travel to Singapore for their concluding qualifier on 31 March. Although Singapore has already secured qualification, the match remains important for Bangladesh in terms of team cohesion, performance evaluation, and rankings.
Adding to the team, midfielder Hamza Choudhury is expected to join the squad from England, bringing international experience and midfield stability ahead of the upcoming matches.
At the youth level, Bangladesh’s Under-20 teams are also engaged in international tournaments. The men’s squad flew to Malé to participate in the SAFF U-20 Championship, arriving on Eid day and spending the remainder of the day resting. Their tournament campaign commences on 24 March, with coaching staff focusing on tactical preparation and conditioning.
Meanwhile, the women’s Under-20 team departed for Bangkok via US-Bangla Airlines to compete in the AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers. Upon arrival, players performed light stretching exercises to recover from travel fatigue, with structured training planned for the following day.
Despite missing out on traditional Eid celebrations with family, the players and coaching staff remain focused on their international responsibilities. Coaches emphasise that such sacrifices are part of professional sport, where discipline, preparation, and peak performance take precedence over personal occasions.
