INDIAN WELLS, United States, 15 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva delivered a stunning performance to end defending champion Iga Swiatek’s quest for a historic third Indian Wells women’s title, defeating the world number two 7-6 (7/1), 1-6, 6-3 on Friday to secure her place in the final.
At just 17 years old, Andreeva halted Swiatek’s 10-match Indian Wells winning streak, marking the second time in three weeks that she has beaten the Polish star. The young Russian previously overcame Swiatek in the quarter-finals in Dubai, a tournament where she made history as the youngest-ever WTA 1000 champion.
Andreeva will now have an opportunity to claim another prestigious title when she faces the winner of the highly anticipated semi-final clash between world number one Aryna Sabalenka and Australian Open champion Madison Keys on Sunday.
American veteran Keys denied Belarusian powerhouse Sabalenka a third consecutive Australian Open title in January, securing her first Grand Slam victory in Melbourne. Their semi-final meeting in Indian Wells sets the stage for another intense battle, with the victor set to challenge the teenage sensation Andreeva in the final.
A Rising Star in Women’s Tennis
Andreeva’s rapid ascent in the WTA rankings and her fearless performances against top players have made her one of the most exciting young talents in the sport. Her ability to hold her nerve in crucial moments, as seen in the tense first-set tiebreak against Swiatek, highlights her growing maturity on court.
Swiatek, a four-time Grand Slam champion, was widely considered the favourite for the title, having dominated the Indian Wells tournament in recent years. However, Andreeva’s aggressive shot-making and resilience proved too much for the Polish star, signalling a potential shift in the women’s tennis landscape.
As the final approaches, all eyes will be on the young Russian as she aims to continue her remarkable run and further cement her status as a future Grand Slam contender.
