Babar Azam’s Triumphant Return Century After 807 Days

After more than two years without an ODI century, Babar Azam returned in style on Friday, producing a masterclass against Sri Lanka in the second ODI in Rawalpindi. His unbeaten 102 not only guided Pakistan to an eight-wicket win but also cemented a 2-0 series lead for the hosts. The innings showcased his class, timing, and temperament, proving why he remains the backbone of Pakistan’s batting line-up.

Sri Lanka batted first, posting 288 for eight, losing wickets at regular intervals despite Janith Liyanage’s top score of 54. Kamindu Mendis and Sadira Samarawickrama contributed 44 and 42 respectively, but consistent breakthroughs from Haris Rauf and Abrar Ahmed prevented the innings from accelerating.

Chasing the target, Pakistan’s openers Fakhar Zaman and Sim Ayub provided a steady start. After Ayub’s dismissal at 77, Babar formed an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 112 with Mohammad Rizwan, ensuring a comfortable chase. Babar’s 119-ball innings, including eight fours, highlighted his patience and precision. Rizwan contributed 51 not out from 54 balls, maintaining the momentum alongside the star batsman.

Babar’s century carried historical significance. It was his 20th ODI hundred, making him the third-fastest globally to achieve the feat, reaching it in 136 innings. He equalled Saeed Anwar’s record for Pakistan while surpassing Mohammad Yousuf on home soil with his eighth century. Across all formats, Babar now boasts 32 centuries, ranking fourth in Pakistan’s cricket history. Additionally, he has been involved in 40 ODI century partnerships, second only to Inzamam-ul-Haq, further underscoring his consistency in building winning innings.

Babar’s celebration, kneeling in prostration, reflected both his relief and devotion. Pakistan now look to continue their dominance in the series finale today, with Babar at the heart of their batting fortunes.
