Bangladesh have been handed a challenging group in the upcoming AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup, set to take place in Thailand in April 2026. The young Tigresses, led by Afeeda Khandaker and Mosammat Sagorika, have been placed in Group A alongside Vietnam, China, and hosts Thailand.
The official draw was held on Monday in Bangkok, where Bangladesh’s name was the first to be drawn from the pot. As per tournament tradition, the team was subsequently placed in Group A with the host nation.
According to the latest FIFA Women’s Rankings, Bangladesh are placed 104th, considerably lower than their group opponents — Vietnam (37th), China (16th), and Thailand (53rd). Among them, China stand out as former champions, having lifted the title in 2006.
Bangladesh’s senior women’s team recently toured Thailand in October, playing two friendly matches against the hosts. Despite showing moments of promise, they suffered defeats by 3–0 and 5–1 respectively. The under-20 side will now be looking to gain valuable experience and put up a stronger performance when they face Thailand again in the Asian Cup.
The tournament format will see the top two teams from each of the three groups — the group winners and runners-up — automatically qualify for the quarter-finals, along with the two best third-placed teams. The four semi-finalists will then earn a direct spot in the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in Poland in September next year.
Earlier, in August, Bangladesh booked their place in the final round of the competition after a solid display in the qualifiers. Placed in Group H, they faced South Korea, Laos (hosts) and Timor-Leste, winning two matches and losing one to finish as group runners-up with six points. Under AFC qualification rules, the eight group winners and the three best runners-up progressed to the tournament’s final stage.
