As the practice session drew to a close, Bangladesh’s cricketers were putting the finishing touches on their preparations for the final T20 against Ireland at the Bir Shreshtho Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram. The net bowlers were busy with the main squad, but batting coach Mohammad Ashraful took Shami Hossain aside for a private session. There were no other batsmen or bowlers present, allowing Ashraful to focus solely on Shami.
During the practice, Shami played a cover drive, prompting Ashraful to remark, “If you had gone for the lofted shot, it would have been a simple catch.” He also praised Shami’s technique and asked if he wished to work on any other shots. This level of personalised coaching demonstrates the management’s attention to detail ahead of the World Cup.
Shami, who had been omitted from the first two T20 squads, has been at the centre of discussion following the chief selector’s press conference, where he expressed concern over Shami’s absence. Meanwhile, Mahidul Islam, selected in Shami’s place, had not featured in the first two matches. Questions now arise over whether the team management’s plans to evaluate him before the World Cup were overlooked.
Bangladesh lost the opening match but leveled the series in the second. A win today would secure the home series, while a defeat could invite criticism. This match also represents the last opportunity to assess Mahidul before the February–March T20 World Cup.
Pace bowling coach Shaun Tait emphasised simplicity, stating, “We don’t need to overcomplicate things. Play good cricket and win the match. Every international victory boosts confidence.” He also highlighted the growing competitiveness among Bangladesh’s pace bowlers, noting that it pushes each player to improve further.
For Ireland, the series was also a valuable opportunity to prepare under similar conditions to India, where the World Cup will be held. Head coach Heinrich Malan commented that the first two matches clarified their process and objectives. A series win today would provide both confidence and momentum ahead of the global tournament.
