Bangladesh’s domestic football is enjoying a period of growth, with the 2025 season witnessing notable achievements and increased fan engagement. However, beneath this surface success, challenges persist. The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has announced that one of the season’s planned tournaments, the prestigious Super Cup, will not take place due to a lack of sponsorship.
At the start of the season, BFF had intended to organise five major domestic competitions. Three of these—Bangladesh 2.0 Challenge Cup, the Federation Cup, and the Bangladesh Premier League—have already been successfully completed. The Super Cup, which was slated to be a major highlight of the season, has now been cancelled, leaving clubs and supporters disappointed.
BFF Senior Vice-President and Professional League Committee Chairman, Imrul Hasan, confirmed the cancellation. He explained, “The Super Cup cannot go ahead this season because a title sponsor pulled out at the last moment. Initially, a telecommunications company had agreed to support the tournament, but they withdrew just days ago. There is no feasible way to stage the competition this year; it will now be postponed until the next season.”
The Super Cup holds historical significance in Bangladesh football, having previously been staged in 2009, 2011, and 2013. It has traditionally provided a platform for top-tier clubs to showcase talent and for emerging players to gain competitive experience against the nation’s strongest teams. Its absence this season is expected to impact player development and reduce opportunities for clubs to test new strategies in high-profile matches.
The current season’s domestic tournaments can be summarised as follows:
| Tournament Name | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bangladesh 2.0 Challenge Cup | Completed | Successfully concluded with strong participation |
| Federation Cup | Completed | Featured national team players |
| Bangladesh Premier League | Completed | Season completed according to schedule |
| Super Cup | Cancelled | Sponsorship withdrawn; postponed to next season |
| Other Special Tournaments | Pending | Potential organisation in the next season |
Football analysts emphasise the importance of stable sponsorship for the sustainability of domestic competitions. While the overall domestic scene shows promise, the cancellation of a marquee event like the Super Cup underscores the fragile financial underpinning of professional football in Bangladesh. Observers suggest that ensuring consistent backing from sponsors is critical not only for player development but also for sustaining fan engagement and maintaining international standards.
Despite the setback, BFF remains committed to reviving the Super Cup and ensuring that all planned competitions proceed smoothly in future seasons. For now, fans and clubs alike will have to wait until 2026 for the return of one of Bangladesh’s most prestigious football tournaments.
