Bangladesh to Face San Marino in European Friendly

Bangladesh football is set to reach a new milestone as the national team prepares to face San Marino in an international friendly on 5 June. The match, classified as a FIFA Tier-1 international friendly, will be played on San Marino soil, marking a notable moment for Bangladeshi footballers.

The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) announced in a statement that, although Bangladesh has previously played friendlies against numerous countries, this will be the first official match against a European national team. Moreover, it will be the first time Bangladeshi players compete in an international fixture on European soil.

Historically, Bangladesh has faced European sides, though these instances are often overlooked. In 2000, Bangladesh played a friendly against India in Leicester, England. At that time, Hasanuzzaman Bablu served as coach. He recalled, “The match featured both national teams, and India was captained by Baichung Bhutia, who was playing in an English club. Bangladesh lost 1–0, with Aminul as goalkeeper.”

Additionally, in 2001, Bangladesh competed in the Millennium Super Soccer Cup in Kochi, India, facing two European sides—Bosnia and Herzegovina and Yugoslavia—in FIFA-recognised fixtures. These matches, although historic, are often overshadowed by newer announcements.

The BFF emphasised that the upcoming friendly against San Marino is not merely a match but an opportunity to foster friendship and football development between the two nations. For San Marino, this encounter is equally historic, as it will be the first time they face an Asian opponent in their footballing history.

Bangladesh’s players are expected to gain valuable international experience from this tour, which could benefit their performance in upcoming Asian Cup qualifiers or FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. While the venue and kick-off time have yet to be finalised, the BFF confirmed that details would be announced shortly.

A comparison of FIFA rankings highlights the relative standings of the two teams:

San Marino, a tiny European state, is completely enclosed within Italy, covering just 61 square kilometres, making it the world’s fifth smallest country.

Despite the significant gap in FIFA rankings, the BFF sees this match as a strategic step to improve the team’s international competitiveness. Engaging with European opposition will allow Bangladesh’s squad to test tactics, develop resilience, and gain exposure to diverse playing styles, laying a foundation for stronger future performances on the continental and global stage.

This friendly promises to be a historic chapter in Bangladesh’s football journey, enhancing both sporting skill and international recognition.
