Bangladesh is set to make history in women’s football, as the national team prepares to compete in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup main stage for the very first time. The tournament, scheduled from 1–21 March across five venues in three Australian cities, will see the Red and Greens take on some of Asia’s strongest teams. Late on Friday night, at 12:30 am Australian time, the squad arrived in Sydney, marking the start of a historic campaign.
Despite the fatigue of a long-haul flight, the team wasted no time in commencing training. Just seven hours after landing at Valentine Sports Park, head coach Peter Butler led the players onto the pitch. By 8 am, in the bright Sydney morning sun, key players including Afida and Rituparna were already engaged in intense drills. Following the morning session, the squad continued their preparation in the gym during the afternoon.
Goalkeeper coach Masud Ahmed shared an encouraging video update on the players’ physical and mental condition. He noted,
“Although the long journey left the players a little tired, there are no injury concerns. Everyone is fully fit. Our current focus is on adapting to the local conditions, and the first day’s training session has been very productive.”
Sydney’s climate is relatively mild compared to Dhaka. While Dhaka’s temperature hovers around 30 °C, Sydney is currently averaging 23 °C, with warm conditions in the morning and midday. Coaching staff are confident that these conditions will pose no significant challenge for the team.
Valentine Sports Park has impressed the squad with its facilities. Masud Ahmed added,
“Everything a professional football team requires is available here. Under Coach Butler’s guidance, the players are putting in maximum effort to acclimatise to the environment.”
Before the main competition, Bangladesh will test their tactics in a friendly match against a local club at Valentine Sports Club on 25 February. This match will provide a valuable opportunity for the team to fine-tune strategies and build cohesion ahead of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
The team’s schedule in Sydney is summarised below:
