BPL Auction Returns After 12 Years with Stunning Budgets: Fierce Battle for Top Local and Overseas Stars

After a long wait of twelve years, the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) players’ auction is finally making its comeback, and it has already ignited immense excitement among cricket fans. This year’s edition of the BPL will begin on 19 December, but all eyes are currently on the much-anticipated auction scheduled for 30 November. The 2024–25 season will feature six teams, including the newly added franchise, Noakhali Express.

Ahead of the auction, each franchise is permitted to sign up to two Bangladeshi and two overseas players directly. However, signing at least one local and one foreign cricketer is compulsory. This pre-auction phase has already sparked heated negotiations, especially for the players who are in top form or have delivered consistently in previous BPL seasons.

A major highlight of this year’s auction is the sizeable budget allocated for foreign players. Each franchise must spend a minimum of 350,000 US dollars on overseas signings. While they must buy at least two foreign cricketers during the auction, they will also have the freedom to sign additional overseas players after the auction, depending on their team strategy. This two-phase signing system promises a riveting contest—both during and after the auction.

The BPL authorities have listed a total of 250 overseas players, divided into five categories. The base price for Category A has been set at 35,000 dollars. Categories B, C, D, and E carry base prices of 26,000, 20,000, 15,000, and 15,000 dollars respectively. The incremental bid rises also vary by category—from as high as 5,000 dollars to as low as 1,000 dollars. With some big international names in the pool, the bidding war is expected to become heated very quickly.

On the other hand, the auction for local cricketers is no less significant. Although the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has not disclosed the total number of domestic players registered, franchises will be allowed to buy between 12 and 14 Bangladeshi cricketers from the auction, alongside their two pre-signed domestic players. The base price for local players ranges from 5 million taka in Category A to just 11,000 taka in Category F. The bid increments are equally diverse, rising from 500,000 taka in the highest category to 20,000 taka in the lowest.

According to the rules, teams must pick at least one player from Category A, three each from Categories B, C and D, two from Category E, and as many as they wish from Category F. Franchises will have a total budget of 45 million taka dedicated solely to local players. However, the two directly signed Bangladeshi cricketers will not be counted within this budget.

In addition to player recruitment, each team may register up to 12 support staff members, including the manager, coaches, analysts and other officials. With just days left before the auction, teams are busy analysing their squad needs, financial strategies and long-term planning.

This year’s BPL auction promises more than just a battle for star names. It will be a true test of financial acumen, strategic thinking and the ability to build a balanced squad. After twelve years, the return of the auction is set to redefine the competitive spirit of the tournament.
