Brazil plan new attacking approach with Vinícius at the centre

Brazilian national team coach Carlo Ancelotti has revealed plans to deploy Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior in a central attacking role, believing the position will make him more effective.

Vinícius usually plays on the left wing for both club and country. However, Ancelotti feels his goal-scoring potential could be better utilised in the centre. “As a winger, Vinícius has to dribble past several defenders and touch the ball seven or eight times to score,” he explained. “From a central position, a single well-timed movement can be enough to create a goal.”

He added, “Vinícius understands this and is enthusiastic about playing in this role. We have a player who is dangerous on the wing, but can also be equally threatening from the centre.”

As Real Madrid coach, Ancelotti has occasionally employed Vinícius as a central striker, particularly close to the penalty area. This approach has proven effective in giving him better scoring opportunities.

The 25-year-old Brazilian forward has been representing the national team since September 2019, scoring eight goals in 43 appearances. This season, he has netted five goals and provided three assists in 16 matches for Real Madrid.

Vinícius is expected to feature in his new role during Brazil’s upcoming international friendly against Senegal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
