Chelsea forward João Pedro has expressed confidence that Brazil’s attacking unit will soon regain its rhythm, despite the national team’s recent disappointing performances. Speaking ahead of Brazil’s upcoming clash with Croatia in Orlando, Pedro highlighted that the current squad boasts players of comparable quality to legends such as Ronaldo Nazário, Ronaldinho, and Romário. According to him, the team only needs time to overcome recent frustrations and ignite their attacking prowess.
Last week, Brazil suffered a 2–1 defeat in a friendly against France. Throughout the match, fans vocalised their frustration by chanting Neymar’s name, reflecting concerns over the team’s goal-scoring capabilities.
Brazilian coach Carlo Ancelotti had fielded a formidable attacking line-up for the game, featuring some of the world’s top forwards: Raphinha (Barcelona), Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal), Vinícius Júnior (Real Madrid), and Matheus Cunha (Manchester United). João Pedro entered in the second half, but even this star-studded attack could not prevent defeat.
Despite the setback, Pedro remains optimistic. At a press conference ahead of the Croatia match, he said,
“We are beginning to understand each other better. I play in England, Vinícius in Spain, Raphinha in another club – everyone has different environments. At club level, we train together all year, but in the national team, things are different. Adjusting quickly is essential. With time, everything will flow more smoothly, and gradually, the team will click.”
A key factor affecting Brazil’s attack has been Neymar’s absence since October 2023, when he suffered a torn knee ligament while representing the national team. Although Neymar has returned to action for Santos, he has yet to reach his peak form and has not been included in Ancelotti’s squad.
Other star forwards have also struggled to replicate their club form at the international level. Vinícius has scored just eight goals in 46 appearances, while Raphinha has netted 11 times in 36 matches. Pedro, 24, believes that the pressure of Brazil not winning a World Cup for 24 years has impeded these players from realising their full potential.
Brazil Attacking Stats

Pedro emphasised, “Previously, Brazil had stars like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, and Romário. Today’s team also has players of that calibre. Vinícius at Real Madrid, Raphinha at Barcelona, myself at Chelsea, alongside Estevão and André Santos – all of us compete at top clubs. The challenge is the long World Cup drought. We are the world’s best national team, but the pressure grows when trophies are absent for years.”
Brazil will face Croatia at 06:00 BST in Orlando, with hopes that their star-laden attack will finally find the cohesion needed to recapture the team’s historic brilliance.
