Since moving down from Division I in 2022, Canfield High School’s girls basketball program has become known for deep postseason runs. Over the last three years, the Cardinals have reached the district championship each season, winning twice, including a 23-3 record last year that led them to the Division IV regional semifinals.
Seven seniors return this season, including last year’s All-American Conference Player of the Year Jenna Triveri. Head coach Matt Reel commented, “Our goal is always to reach the Sweet 16. With our seniors returning, we feel confident despite moving up to Division III.”
The senior class provides the team with experience and leadership. Triveri, averaging 13.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists last season, is expected to elevate her teammates’ performance. Alongside her, second- and third-leading scorers Carly Fleming and Sofia Castronova will be crucial contributors.
Fleming brings defensive energy, averaging 4.1 steals per game, while Castronova’s versatility ensures team cohesion. Other seniors, including Ceci Muckleroy, Lorieonna Jannone, Jenna Havrilla, and newcomer Brooke O’Palick, are expected to expand their roles.
Younger players, such as juniors Sydney Rakers and Makayla Brown, sophomores Amara Watson, Harper Venrose, Katelyn Rakers, and freshman Noelle Sahli, will gain their first varsity experience. Defense, experience, and versatility remain the team’s strengths, preparing them for a challenging schedule including traditional powers Massillon, Norton, Chippewa, Perry, Beaver, Hoban, Streetsboro, and West Branch.
