Chelsea Appoint Unheralded Coach Long-Term

Chelsea Football Club have appointed Liam Rosignol as their new head coach on a six-year contract, despite the 41-year-old’s limited managerial experience. Rosignol, who has just three years of coaching experience and has never previously managed in the Premier League, succeeds Enzo Mareska, who departed abruptly at the start of the year.

Before the contract was finalised, Rosignol addressed a farewell press conference at Ligue 1 club Strasbourg, confirming he had verbally agreed to join Chelsea. Shortly afterwards, the agreement was formalised.

In a statement on Chelsea’s official website, Rosignol expressed his pride at taking the role:
“It is an immense honour to be appointed head coach of Chelsea Football Club. This is a club with a proud identity and a rich history of winning trophies. My responsibility is to uphold that identity and to reflect those values in every match we play.”

Both Chelsea and Strasbourg fall under the ownership of BlueCo, which took control of Chelsea in 2022. Rosignol becomes the club’s fourth permanent head coach under the BlueCo era. He explained that his emotional connection to Strasbourg motivated him to personally announce his departure.

During his playing career, Rosignol featured in both the Premier League and the Championship, representing Fulham, Reading, and Hull City. He began his coaching career at Derby County, working under Philip Cocu and Wayne Rooney, and in 2022 briefly served as interim manager following Rooney’s departure. He later managed Championship side Hull City but was dismissed after 18 months. In July 2024, he took charge of Strasbourg and guided the team to a seventh-place finish in Ligue 1 in the last season.

Meanwhile, Enzo Mareska had led Chelsea to victory in the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup during his first season. However, escalating tensions within the club led to his sudden departure on New Year’s Day.

Following Mareska’s exit, U21 coach Callum McFarland took temporary charge for Sunday’s 1–1 draw against Manchester City. Chelsea are set to face Fulham in the London derby on Wednesday, with Rosignol expected to take full control of the team.
