Chennai Super Kings Release Matheesha Pathirana—Here’s Why!

Just hours before the IPL 2026 retention window closed, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made a surprising decision: Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana has been released from the squad. Despite being hailed as a premier death-over specialist after an impressive 2023 season, Pathirana will not be part of CSK’s campaign in the upcoming season.

The decision was confirmed on Saturday. CSK had retained Pathirana ahead of the 2025 mega auction for INR 13 crore. However, ongoing injury concerns and inconsistent performances led the franchise to release him for 2026.

Pathirana’s rise in 2023 was remarkable: 19 wickets in 12 matches at an economy of 8.01. However, injuries began to take their toll, with the 2024 season cut short and 2025 producing only 13 wickets in 12 matches. Head coach Stephen Fleming noted that changes to his bowling action by Sri Lanka Cricket had reduced his effectiveness.

Recently, Pathirana played in the Asia Cup, having previously left the SA20 midway due to injury. Concerns over his fitness, bowling action, and consistency prompted CSK to let him go.

This move also signals a broader restructuring at CSK. Alongside Pathirana, New Zealand batters Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra were released. In a major trade, Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran were sent to Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson.

CSK will enter the IPL auction on 16 December in Abu Dhabi with significant funds. Sources indicate the franchise may attempt to re-sign Pathirana at a lower price if needed.
