INDIAN WELLS, United States, March 12, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Holger Rune was as exhilarated as the crowd after pulling off a stunning between-the-legs shot to save a break point during his upset of Stefanos Tsitsipas at Indian Wells on Tuesday.
As he left the court, the 21-year-old Dane couldn’t wait to watch the moment again on his phone. However, the replay didn’t quite meet his expectations.
“You know, I kind of thought I’d look like Roger Federer when I hit it, but it didn’t quite turn out that way,” Rune admitted. “So that was a bit disappointing.”
Despite the anticlimactic replay, the shot was a crucial moment in his 6-4, 6-4 victory over the world number nine Tsitsipas, securing his spot in the Indian Wells quarter-finals for the second consecutive year.
This marks Rune’s first quarter-final of 2025, following a disappointing period for the young talent, who rocketed into the limelight in 2022 when he claimed his first Masters 1000 title by defeating Novak Djokovic in the Paris Masters final at just 19 years old.
Once ranked as high as fourth in the world, Rune has since slipped to 13th, struggling with consistency while his peers, such as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, have gone on to achieve Grand Slam success.
Although his recent form has been frustrating, Rune expressed on Tuesday that he’s learning to handle the lows, and with a more stable mindset, he is confident he can break into the elite ranks once again.
“It’s about producing results, but also about improving your game and finding consistency,” he explained. “I don’t think I’ve become a worse player over the past two years. In fact, I believe I’ve become a better all-round player.”
“When you have high expectations and don’t quite meet them, it’s naturally disappointing,” he added. “But it’s simple, and maybe it sounds boring to say, but I just love tennis.”
“Even when I’m not satisfied with my results, I still love going out to the practice court to work on my forehands, backhands, my shots, my physicality… I feel like I’m living my dream.”
