Gary Kirsten Brings World-Class Expertise to Namibia

Cricket Namibia has taken a bold step in its preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, appointing former South African batting maestro and World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten as a consultant for the national men’s team.

Kirsten, a legendary figure in international cricket, amassed 7,289 runs in Tests and 6,798 in One-Day Internationals across a career spanning 101 Tests and 185 ODIs. However, it is perhaps his coaching credentials that have captured the attention of the Namibian cricket board. Under his leadership, India famously lifted the 2011 World Cup, and he has also guided South Africa and Pakistan at the international level. Beyond international cricket, Kirsten has made a mark in the Indian Premier League, contributing to Gujarat Titans’ triumph in their debut season in 2022.

“It is indeed a privilege to work with Cricket Namibia,” Kirsten stated. “I have been thoroughly impressed with the dedication and determination to create a high-performance cricket environment. Their new state-of-the-art cricket stadium is a testament to their commitment to ensuring their national teams are competing with the best cricket nations in the world. Their senior men’s national team is performing well, and I look forward to adding value to their preparation for the T20 World Cup in February next year.”

During his consultancy role, Kirsten will collaborate closely with Namibia’s head coach, Craig Williams, providing strategic insights and technical guidance to strengthen the squad. Analysts suggest that Kirsten’s involvement could be a game-changer for Namibia, a team steadily rising through the ranks of associate cricket nations.

Namibia’s recent performances have demonstrated remarkable progress, and the inclusion of a figure of Kirsten’s stature signals the country’s intent to challenge more established cricket nations on the global stage. His expertise is expected to benefit not only the senior men’s team but also inspire younger players aspiring to compete at the highest level.

As the T20 World Cup approaches, all eyes will be on Namibia to see if Kirsten’s influence translates into tangible results on the field. With a blend of youthful talent, disciplined preparation, and world-class consultancy, Namibia is positioning itself as one of the most intriguing dark horses in the upcoming tournament.
