Goalkeeper Matvei Safonov Heroics Secure PSG’s First Global Title

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) claimed a historic triumph last night in Doha, Qatar, as they lifted their first ever Intercontinental Cup, thanks to the extraordinary heroics of goalkeeper Matvei Safonov. After 90 minutes and extra time ended in a 1–1 deadlock against South American champions Flamengo, it was a tense penalty shoot-out that ultimately decided the winner. Safonov proved to be the match-winner, saving four penalties to secure a 2–1 shoot-out victory and deliver glory to the French giants.

The Russian keeper’s remarkable performance proved decisive, providing the edge PSG needed to lift the coveted trophy. With this victory, PSG’s cabinet in 2025 now boasts six major honours, following triumphs in the French Super Cup, Ligue 1, Coupe de France, UEFA Champions League, and UEFA Super Cup under the guidance of coach Luis Enrique. Previously, PSG had finished as runners-up in the FIFA Club World Cup, losing to Chelsea in the final.

The match itself was a thrilling affair. PSG opened the scoring in the 38th minute through Khicha Kvaratskhelia. Flamengo responded in the 62nd minute with a penalty conversion by Jorginho, sending the match into extra time. With no further goals in regulation or extra time, the fate of the title rested on the nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out, where PSG emerged victorious.

Following the win, PSG star Vitinha commented, “We approached this match with complete commitment. Flamengo are an outstanding, highly competitive team. I know praise here means little, as they wanted to win just as much as we did. We gave everything on the pitch, fought to the last moment, and ultimately had to triumph in the penalties.”

The Intercontinental Cup is a FIFA-organised tournament, recently reintroduced with a new format. It features champions from six continental confederations. While European champions enter directly into the final, other continental winners must progress through several stages to qualify. The tournament was inaugurated in Qatar in 2024, replacing the previous knockout-style Club World Cup (2005–23), which saw Real Madrid beat Mexico’s Pachuca in the inaugural edition.

This year’s final pitted the European champions PSG against the South American champions Flamengo, producing a gripping contest that ultimately showcased individual brilliance and collective resolve. Safonov’s heroics ensured PSG finally claimed their maiden global crown, cementing a memorable night for the Parisian side.
