Guardiola Urges Haaland To Keep Spirits High

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has called on his players, including striker Erling Haaland, to maintain their confidence ahead of a crucial Premier League clash against Chelsea this Sunday.

City’s recent outing in December saw them suffer a 3-0 defeat at home to Sunderland in the first leg. The return fixture, however, ended in a goalless draw on Thursday night at the Stadium of Light, leaving City frustrated despite dominating possession. After 19 rounds of the season, City remain four points behind league leaders Arsenal, who have accumulated 45 points.

City will face another stern test when they host Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. The Blues currently sit fifth on the table with 30 points. Guardiola’s side, playing on home turf, are considered slight favourites, but recent form has left some players unsettled. Haaland, Phil Foden, and Bernardo Silva appeared particularly disheartened following the draw against Sunderland.

Speaking ahead of the Chelsea clash, Guardiola emphasised the importance of maintaining morale. “The lads are a little disappointed,” he admitted. “But when you have to prepare for a tough match against Chelsea in just three days, we must stay alert and keep our heads high.”

Against Sunderland, City dominated possession with 68% of the ball and registered 14 shots, yet failed to convert any into goals. The team’s missed opportunities left them visibly frustrated.

Guardiola acknowledged the hosts’ performance, saying, “Sunderland are a very good team, especially physically strong. In the first half, we were under pressure from their pressing. The second half was excellent for us, but we could not finish our chances in the box. We missed the finishing touch.”

With a challenging fixture ahead against Chelsea, Guardiola’s message is clear: resilience and confidence will be key if City are to maintain their push for the Premier League title.
