Historic Breakthrough: Saudi Arabia to Launch Landmark Women’s T20 League in 2026

Saudi Arabia is preparing to enter a bold new era of global sport as it announces the launch of its first-ever professional women’s cricket league—the Women’s World T20 Challenge—scheduled to begin in 2026. The tournament, which has received full sanction from the International Cricket Council (ICC), will be the result of a five-year partnership between FairBreak Global and the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation (SACF). For a country still relatively new to mainstream cricket, the league represents a monumental leap forward in both sporting ambition and gender inclusion.

The competition will feature six teams comprising players from more than thirty-five nations, establishing it as one of the most diverse women’s cricket tournaments in the world. It is expected to take place annually in either September or October, falling neatly between the conclusion of The Hundred in England and the start of Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League. By positioning the league at this particular moment in the global cricket calendar, organisers aim to attract the world’s top players while avoiding scheduling conflicts.

FairBreak Global, founded in 2013 to promote gender equality and create career pathways for female athletes, has already earned a reputation for staging high-quality international events. Its previous tournaments in Dubai and Hong Kong, held in 2022 and 2023, featured leading stars such as Chamari Athapaththu, Sophie Ecclestone, Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp. Despite the impressive lineup, Indian players were absent due to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refusing to issue No-Objection Certificates. It remains uncertain whether the BCCI will approve participation for the new Saudi-based league.

Organisers emphasise that the tournament aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 framework, which aims to expand women’s participation across sport, education and public life. Part of the project includes developing structured cricket programmes for Saudi women and girls, enhancing grassroots opportunities and cultivating long-term national talent. The league is expected not only to showcase international players but also to accelerate the growth of the local game.

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has signalled strong intent to increase its cricket footprint. The highly publicised hosting of the IPL auction in Jeddah in 2024 drew significant global attention, and discussions are underway for the Kingdom to host future matches of the ILT20. The Women’s World T20 Challenge is expected to secure a permanent position within the international women’s cricket calendar, strengthening Saudi Arabia’s emerging role as a key stakeholder in the sport.

Experts believe the launch of the league could mark a turning point for women’s cricket, particularly in regions where opportunities have historically been limited. With strong investment and global outreach, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a new hub for international women’s sport. The world will be watching closely to see whether the Kingdom’s ambitious project fulfils its promise and reshapes the future of the women’s game.
