BPL 2026 Auction: Big Money and Bigger Drama

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is set to return to its traditional auction system for the 2026 season, a move designed to enhance transparency, competitiveness, and excitement in player recruitment. The BPL Governing Council has now finalised the detailed auction policy, which includes base prices for all player categories, bid increments, and squad regulations. The policy has been circulated among the five franchise owners for feedback, and once approved by 21 November, it will be officially announced.

Local players will be divided into six categories, with Category A—the highest level—carrying a base price of BDT 50 lakh. Each successive bid will increase by BDT 5 lakh, ensuring an engaging bidding process. Every franchise must select at least 13 local players from the auction. In addition, they can sign up to two local stars directly before the auction, but the total number of Bangladeshi players cannot exceed 16 per team. The maximum team budget for local players has been set at BDT 4.5 crore, though fees for direct signings will not count towards this cap.

Foreign players will also be part of the auction, classified into five categories. Category A international players will start at a base price of USD 35,000, with bids increasing by USD 5,000. Each team must acquire at least two overseas players through the auction, while fielding a minimum of two and no more than four in match-day squads. Franchises can directly sign one or two foreign players before the auction, but the total budget for foreign players, including direct signings, cannot exceed USD 350,000.

Direct signing rules are strictly controlled by the BPL Governing Council. Teams can sign up to two local and one to two international players before the auction, ensuring that the process remains competitive yet fair. All signings must receive official approval to become valid.

Team composition regulations limit each franchise to 22 members, including players, coaches, and support staff. Officially registered staff cannot exceed 12, covering positions such as head coach, manager, and analysts. Payment schedules for all players are structured in three instalments: 25% upon signing, 55% before the final league match, and 25% within 30 days after the tournament concludes. Taxes will be deducted in accordance with National Board of Revenue regulations, and all contracts will follow a standard tripartite agreement issued by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

Cricket analysts predict that the auction system will inject fresh dynamism into the BPL, allowing emerging Bangladeshi talents to shine alongside international stars. The 2026 season promises a blend of strategic bidding, high-stakes drama, and unprecedented financial rewards for standout players. By reintroducing the auction, the BPL is poised to offer fans a more thrilling and equitable spectacle than ever before.
