Former Bangladesh cricketer Imrul Kayes is officially listed as an employee at the Ujolpur Post Office in Meherpur, earning a monthly salary of just 4,490 Taka. However, a visit to the village reveals that the post office does not exist in reality—there are no signboards, no building, and no regular postal staff.
Locals report that multiple letters have recently been returned to senders. For instance, a visa document for the United States was sent back to the sender. Even some job interview letters went missing. People in the village confirm that no functioning post office exists there.
Official records from the Meherpur main post office list Imrul Kayes and Abdul Jalil as Extra Departmental Agents (EDA) and Raju Ahmed as EDMC. Yet, villagers have no knowledge of their presence. Investigations reveal that Imrul is currently working as a coach at a cricket academy in Australia.
Speaking from Australia, Kayes explained that he attached his name to the local post office staff to enhance public trust in the Bangladesh postal system. He clarified that any returned letters were the responsibility of the postman, not him.
Officials state that he was appointed to the EDA position in 2021 following instructions from the then State Minister for Public Administration, with a modest monthly salary of 4,500 Taka. The district administration has promised to investigate the matter and take necessary actions if warranted.
Locals question the fairness of giving such a government position to a successful cricketer from an influential family, instead of a deserving village youth. Kayes’ family holds significant political and business influence in Meherpur.
