Indian Cricketers Playing Under ‘Fear’ and ‘Insecurity’

India’s crushing defeat against South Africa in the Kolkata Test has triggered widespread criticism, with former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif voicing concerns over the team’s mental approach. Kaif believes that many Indian players approach the national side with fear rather than confidence.

Chasing a modest target of 123 runs at Eden Gardens, India fell dramatically short, being bowled out for just 93 in the fourth innings on a spin-friendly wicket. Since Gautam Gambhir took charge as head coach, this marks India’s fourth defeat in eight home Tests, raising questions about team preparation and strategy.

On his YouTube channel, Kaif criticised the team’s management, saying: “No matter which players take the field, there’s no assurance that someone has their back. Everyone is playing with fear; no one is playing freely.”

Kaif cited the examples of Sarfaraz Khan and Sai Sudharsan to illustrate his point. Sarfaraz, who scored a century during India’s heavy defeat to New Zealand, has not been included in the squad for the subsequent series in Australia. Similarly, Sai Sudharsan, who scored 87 and 39 in his most recent Test against the West Indies, was overlooked for the playing eleven against South Africa in Kolkata. According to Kaif, both players possess superior spin-playing skills compared to their peers.

He added, “Even after scoring a century, Sarfaraz’s place was never secure. Sai Sudharsan also couldn’t play the next match despite his performance. I feel there’s a lot of hesitation in the team… Players are lacking self-belief and seem burdened by doubt. On such pitches, with that mindset, performing well becomes almost impossible.”

India is scheduled to play the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati on 22 November. Kaif’s observations underline the urgent need for India to build mental resilience and a culture of confidence within the squad.
